He completed his PhD in Letters (Portuguese Literature) in the University of Lisbon. He is a Retired Professor of Higher Education, having been a Professor in the Department of Romantic Literatures of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, from 1974 to 2009. From 2005 to 2007, he was the President of the Scientific Commission of the Department of Romantic Literatures in the same institution. He is the Director of the Centre of Portuguese Folk Traditions Professor Manuel Viegas Guerreiro (CTPP), from the University of Lisbon (now a Pole of CLEPUL), and of the publication Revista Lusitana – Nova Série. He is a director of the International Forum – Centre for Studies on Contemporary Society (GR-RAM); he is a member of the Project “A Rota do Escravo” (UNESCO) and of the Scientific Committee of the Portuguese National Reading Plan (GPM, ME, MCTES). He is also the author of papers and essays in the areas of Portuguese Literature, Portuguese Culture, Travel Literature, Oral and Traditional Literature and Madeiran Literature.
