He was a self-taught journalist, and there is little historical data about him. It is known that he founded the newspaper Diário do Comércio, collaborated in Gazetilha and also participated in Diário de Notícias and Diário Popular as a writer. He had a primary school education, and was the main writer of O Distrito do Funchal and O Diário do Comércio. He was a polemicist and a fierce critic, and he seems to also have written poetry under the pseudonym of Campos Verde. He probably also worked as a clerk in the General District Board.
