He was a commander, lawyer, notary and collector of art objects. He served as the chief of the Notarial Office of Funchal. He published, along with Pedro Góis Pita and Juvenal Henriques de Araujo, the journal Revista de Direito. Despite his professional training and career, he was best known as a collector of works of art, which he gathered since the 1930s (ceramics, sculpture, engravings, furniture, paintings). After he moved to a house in Calçada (the current House-Museum Frederico de Freitas), his collection further increased. In 1978, its assets (the contents of his house) were bequeathed to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, by his will.
