In 1949, when she was 20 years old, Maria Ascensão Fernandes Teixeira joined the Folklore Group of the People’s House of Camacha, after being invited by António Martins Júnior. This would become her main occupation. Prior to that, she learned embroidery, crochet and sewing, having been a teacher and dressmaker. In the folklore group, she organized activities for more than 50 years, involving not only the members of the original group, but also trained new dancers.
